Adrenaline auto-injectors
Adrenaline auto-injectors are primarily for self-use by patients who are considered to be at risk of anaphylaxis.
They also offer health professionals an alternative method to administer adrenaline (instead of drawing it up from an ampoule).
- If an adrenaline auto-injector is the only available adrenaline preparation you should use it.
- They deliver an adrenaline dose of either 150 microgram, 300 microgram or 500 microgram.
In a healthcare setting, delivering an IM dose of 500mcg adrenaline is recommended for most adults when treating an anaphylactic reaction.
Give the injection into the middle outer aspect of thigh where a good blood supply will ensure rapid absorption into the bloodstream.
