Treatment of anaphylaxis


Adrenaline is a hormone and a neurotransmitter that is secreted by the adrenal gland. It will cause increased peripheral vascular resistance by vasoconstriction. 

  • The benefits include improved blood pressure and reduced bronchospasm.

If available an intramuscular (IM) injection of adrenaline should be given into the anterolateral aspect of the middle third of the thigh.

IM dose of 1:1000 adrenaline (repeat every 5 minutes if no improvement)

  • Adult and child over 12 years: 500 micrograms (0.5mL).
  • Child aged 6 – 11 years: 300 micrograms (0.3mL).
  • Child 6 months – 5 years: 150 micrograms (0.15mL).
  • Infant up to 6 months: 100 – 150 micrograms (0.1 – 0.15mL
