What is anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly developing, life threatening, hypersensitivity reaction.

Rapid recognition and diagnosis is essential in order to save lives.

Anaphylaxis is likely when the patient experiences the following 3 criteria:

  • Sudden onset and rapid progression of symptoms.
  • Involvement of airway, breathing, and/or circulation (ABCs), which can be life-threatening.
  • Skin and/or mucosal changes such as flushing, urticaria (hives), and angioedema (swelling).

The incidence of anaphylaxis in the UK is increasing due to better reporting practices and awareness.
